This is a brief list of main search engines one needs to worry about. They appear roughly in a descending order of excellence.

Google: Easily the best engine in town
Teoma: Clustering and topic relevancy; a nice one
GigaBlast: A new clustering contender; superb search refinement suggestions
WiseNut: A new clustering contender; nice interface
alltheweb: Big and useful, but naïve
Yahoo! Search: Pretty good for a portal search, but not really general in purpose
HotBot: Powered by Inktomi, so it’s rather naïve; still, useful for tracking
AltaVista: The oldest player in town
